| Eddie Brennan (Brad Davis) is a second-rate club boxed who, at one time, could have been a contender. Still, with his almost-famous killer right hook intact, he genuinely believes he has a chance to regain his stature as a fighter. Unfortunately, nobody else does, not his manager Nicky (Steve Buscemi), his trainer Buddy (Robinson Frank Add). While working a boxing program on television, Eddie gets a look into his own past when he sees highlights, of a fight he lost more than a decade ago. It’s a painful flashback for Eddie, but for Leo (Sam Gray), the crooked manager of up-and-coming contender Salvador Manuella (Sill Costello), the clip is a flash of inspiration. He has finally found in Eddie a safe opponent against whom Manuella can showcase his hard-hitting style. Leo makes a deal with Nicky – that ensures Eddie will take a dive several rounds into the fight. Nicky knows that Eddie’s pride would never allow him to throw the fight. Eddie’s hopes and dreams are re-kindled by the prospect of just one more chance to prove himself. On fight night, Eddie is still unaware of the point of the fight and what is expected of him. Nicky and Buddy soon being to grow increasingly nervous, with Manuella starting to weaken and Eddie still on his feet at the end of round four, Eddie readies himself for the next round. Across the ring, Manuella is ready for blood – Eddie’s blood. |
