In 19th century Ireland, a confident English aristocrat, Agnes McDonnell (Greta Scacchi – Brideshead Revisited), meets the younger, strong willed James Lynchehaun (Daniel Craig – Casino Royale), whom she hires to be the manager of her lavish estate. A divorced woman who scandalizes the locals with her smoking, drinking and impropriety, she is fascinated by this wild, blue-eyed Irishman when he wins a brutal horserace at a local country fair. Despite their class differences and the fact that Lynchehaun is a renowned con-artist, the couple embarks on a torrid affair. But the relationship quickly degenerates as Lynchehaun drags McDonnell into a hostile web of violence and political intrigue. Based on a true story, this tale of passion and betrayal is a gripping and beautifully photographed period drama that sees the future James Bond in one of his best early roles.
