Barbara Stanwyck plays a reporter who’s lost her job. In her last column she includes a letter from a fictitious character ‘JOHN DOE’. In the letter John Doe threatens to kill himself by jumping from the roof of City Hall on Christmas Eve. An overwhelming public reaction to the letter encourages the newspaper to continue with the myth, they hire an ex baseball player, Gary Cooper, to play the part of John Doe. As the myth grows the newspaper’s publisher tries to use it to further his political ambitions.
