Herman Melville’s towering epic of New England seafaring life pits crusty, obsessive Captain Ahab (Patrick Stewart) against his age old nemesis, the great white whale, Moby Dick. Through the magic of digital effects, this story can finally be told in all it’s glory. Ishmael (Henry Thomas) a young man seeking adventure, comes to Nantucket on a blustery winter night to find work on a whaling ship. At the Spouter-Inn, the owner, Coffin, rooms Ishmael with Queequeg, an immense Polynesian harpooner. When Ishmael first sets eyes on the brown skinned, tattooed man, he is frightened for his life, but Queequeg proves to be gentle and a true friends. Meanwhile an old vagabond, Elijah, wanders the dockets of the city at night, observing the mysterious transaction of a tall shadowy man (we don’t see his face) and a man who wears a turban and has gold teeth. The next morning, Ishmael and Queequeg get work on the Pequod. Mystery surrounds the start of their adventure. No one has seen Captain Ahab. There are rumours (which prove to be true) that he had a leg torn off by a vicious white whale. After a squall Ahab finally appears. Despite his peg leg he is a fiery presence. He appears to be on the brink of madness as he insists the crew take part in his revengeful hunt for the great white whale, Moby Dick. Tension on the ship mounts when Ahab reveals he has hired five Middle-Eastern sailors (led by Fedallah – the turbaned man observed earlier) to augment the crew. Some crew members think Fedallah is the devil. On the Caribbean Sea the crew makes it’s first successful kill. Ishmael nearly drowns during the ordeal but is saved by Queequeg. While hundreds of sharks tear at the whale carcass in a feeding frenzy, the cook grills whale steaks on deck and the crew begins it’s elaborate carving up of the leviathan and melting of it’s blubber. Later, a giant white squid is spotted. It’s a sure sign that Moby Dick is near. Ahab rants to the crew about his desire to capture the whale and as he finishes his speed, Fedallah lets out a hoarse whisper “There she blows”. They have found the great white whale.
