This film scooped a host of prestigious awards, including 2 Oscars for Best Screenplay and Best Actress for Simone Signoret, and 3 BAFTAs. Joe Lampton is a young man with ambitions to reach the top. He rises to woo Susan, the daughter of a rich industrialist, but her father realises and sends her away on an extended holiday. Meanwhile he beings an affair with an older woman, Alice, but this doesn’t stop him seeing Susan when she returns. When her father discovers she is pregnant, he forces Joe to marry her. Scared to refuse, he leaves Alice, but his actions lead to tragedy.
