Out on parole after 8 years in jail, inept criminal Bill Hayward returns home to find his two young sons, responsible Dean and wayward Jimmy abandoned by their mother. Bills determined to move on and leave his past behind but his old life has other ideas. Inadvertently, Bills homecoming alerts the authorities to his sons situation. With the prospect of being put into care looming the older boy, Dean black-mails Bill into staying by threatening to tell the police Bill is dealing. Bill reluctantly looks after the boys to keep him-self out of jail and starts to connect with his youngest son, Jimmy whom he has never really known. Bill finds he has a place in life, a home. Through trial but mostly error he struggles to be the Dad he never was. However, when Jimmy gets pulled into the violent world of drugs by Bills old criminal gang, Bill is faced with a stark choice his family or his freedom. Desperate to stay out of jail, Bill must now show his boys that he is a man worth knowing and a Dad worth having.
