US soldier John Carter is on patrol in Afghanistan when he is ambushed by a group of insurgents and left for dead. Mortally injured, he is rushed to secret military base where a team of government scientists explain that his only hope for survival is an experimental teleportation device. The Tharks are a militaristic race and when Carter defeats one of them in combat he is accepted as one of their own. The Tharks attack a ship carrying the other indigenous race of Martians and capture Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium for ransom. Carter struggles to stay neutral in the war between the Tharks, who have adopted him; and the beautiful princess, with whom he has fallen in love. But when a greater threat to both alien races appears, John Carter must convince the enemies to work together to defeat the common foe.
