Product Details:

A young girl at the foot of the steps in front of the Commandant’s house. She is crying, in pain. The result of someone’s fertile imagination? How then, has this same image been reported by at least ten people over the years? Seen from Jetty Cottage – a man’s body floating above the water near the Commandant’s jetty. A sighting documented by three women staying in the cottage on three separate occasions. A building apprentice sleeping in the Parsonage, awakened to find unseen hands gripped tightly around his throat. At least on other person has had the same frightening experience. Ghosts. Do they exist – and, if so, what are they? Are they lost souls who, in death, have been trapped in some way? Are they unable to leave because of some unfinished business?Have they returned to seek vengenace; to punish the living for crimes against them; or has their resting place been disturbed? At Port Arthur’s former penal settlement almost every house and building is believed to have at least one spirit . . . representing the wide cross-section of the settlement’s nineteenth century population – mothers, children, soldiers, servants and convicts. There are sceptics who scoff at the ghostly tales of Port Arthur. But then again, there are sceptics who are sceptics no more, having experienced for themselves some phenomenon that simply cannot be explained. At Port Arthur, day or night, there is more to this reminder of a brutal past than one might think. There are too many memories; too much has happened here; for there not to be spirits who for one reason or another, are destined to linger on.
