(The Killing – Series 1 (2011) “The Killing” is an innovative 20 part thriller from Danish Radio TV Drama. In the course of 20 gripping days we follow the leads and observe the consequences of a heinous crime that seem to ramify throughout Copenhagen. As the investigation unfolds, Copenhagen opens up like a Chinese Box, full of secrets and power struggles. It all starts when head of investigations in the homicide department has her last day at work before embarking on a new chapter in her life. An all but normal family at Vesterbro are minding their everyday life and contemplate moving, when the parents are suddenly thrown into their worst imaginable nightmare. At the same time a top politician is involved in a ruthless but promising election campaign. They all become part of the same story as the police follow the leads. A homicide case takes its beginning and so does the hunt for the perpetrator. In the course of 20 intense days in November their lives change forever. The crime and the hunt for the perpetrator bind very different people together in the same fateful story. As the investigation intensifies, the consequences are wide-ranging and with wide-spread effect, from the hidden agenda of the high school students via the closed environment in immigrant circles and the bureaucracy at town hall, to the many more or less visibly involved people in the ruthless campaign. (The Killing – Series 2 (2012) The body of a slain woman is found in a Copenhagen park commemorating the Danish Resistance in WWII – a symbolic act? An ex-soldier disabled while serving in Afghanistan is savagely killed – a deadly warning? Copenhagen’s Homicide Department is stumped. Detective Commander Brix calls on Chief Inspector Sarah Lund, banished to the provinces after several foul-ups in her last murder investigation. She’s not the easiest to get along with – but she’s the best. Sarah Lund is back, and as sharp as ever. She soon discerns a common thread in the cases – all the victims are ex-soldiers, and all were stationed in Afghanistan. Denmark’s new Minister of Justice and ex-soldier Peter Raben, committed to psychiatric care since his return from the war are the other protagonists in a twisting tale of top-level cover-ups, betrayals and lies set in a climate of fear of Islamic terrorism. More than a classic “whodunit”, the second series of The Killing is a reflection on war and what it does to people – fertile ground for Sarah Lund’s crime-solving adventures, with all the nail biting thrills and heart-pounding excitement of series one. (The Killing – Series 3 (2013) Detective Inspector Sarah Lund (Sofie Grabol) returns in the long-awaited third and final series of The Killing Trilogy. Having found peace after her previous ordeals, Detective Inspector Lund has her curiosity ignited when she notices a tattoo on the victim of what seems to be a random murder at the Copenhagen docks. Attention is quickly drawn toward the Zeeland oil business run by the troubled Robert Zeuthen (Anders W. Berthelsen) who daughter has been kidnapped, and an old flame of Lund’s believes that both the kidnapping and murder may be connected to a possible assassination attempt on the prime minister.
